Team Descriptions

All categories mentioned below are in line with Skate Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Strategy

Intro-to-Synchro

This program is designed for skaters who have achieved CanSkate level 3 as well as skaters who are new to Synchronized Skating and are under 9 years of age. The objective of the Intro category is to begin along the path of learning the basic formations of Synchronized skating, to learn how to work as a team and to have fun in a team sport environment! Skaters in this program must be registered in a CanSkate session via the Oakville Skating Club.

Beginner I

This is a new category for Oakville Edge for 2010-11 and is designed for skaters who have completed CanSkate level 5 and are under 10  years of age.  The objective of the Beginner I category is to introduce and develop the fundamentals of Synchronized skating and the idea of team work.  The focus is to continue developing basic forward and backward skating skills through the discipline of synchronized skating. Skaters are introduced to the idea of team work by participating in a fun team sport at this level. This team will attend 1 "fun" competition during the season. Skaters in this program must be registered in a CanSkate or StarSkate session via the Oakville Skating Club.

Beginner II

This category is designed for skaters who have completed all CanSkate levels and are skating 1 - 2 times/week in a StarSkate sessoin.  The majority of the team (75%) is to be comprised of skaters under the age of 10 (as of July 1, 2010) and the remainder (25%) can be up to, but not 12 years of age as of July 1, 2010.  The objective of the Beginner II category is to continue to develop the fundamentals of Synchronized skating and the idea of team work.  These skaters will also begin to experience competitions as well as focusing on the "learning to train" attributes of the Skate Canada Long Term Athlete Development program.

Elementary

This team is designed for skaters who are working on their Preliminary tests. The majority of the team (75%) is to be comprised of skaters under 12 (as of July 1, 2010) and the remainder (25%) can be up to, but not 15 years of age.  The objective of the Elementary category is to continue to develop the fundamentals of Synchronized skating, while enhancing their core skating skills such as edges, turns and quality of stroking. These skaters will also continue to learn how to train while experiencing competitions.

Juvenile

This team is designed for skaters who are working on  the Junior or Senior Bronze test levels. All skaters must be under 15 as of July 1, 2010.  The objective of the Juvenile category is to build on the basic fundamental skills acquired in Elementary and Beginner by layering more complex skills and elements.

Novice

This team is designed for skaters who are working on their Senior Bronze or Junior Silver tests. Seventy five per cent of the team members must be between 10 and 14 years of age and the remaining 25% must be under 19 years of age.  The objective of the Novice category is to add an increased focus on the ability to perform skills in a competition setting. Development will also include the addition of more complex skills and elements with a keen focus on competing.
